Ansi isn't necessarliy 8-bit.
My board can be set up to use ansi and only 7-bit. It works great from a
vt220 terminal which gets ansi but doesn't get 8-bit.
Seeing as vt100 and ansi aren't TOO far apart, either.
Ansi is just more interesting.
Vt220s are neat because with an "ansi"code (technically vt-only code) you can
have lines of text that are TWO line high as well.

Uhhh... At least with //UPLOAD you can make a long message with ansi in it...
UNlike bland colorless unix...

And if you used //UPLOAD to upload the parity virus, we would simply have a
wonderful message that contained the characters that make up the parity virus.
No big deal.

//UPLOAD is so you can put things into a message that the message editor would
not let you put in (such as ansi codes, although i changed that because I
wanted a certain color to be blinking)...
Of course, under unix, you can't even do much 8-bit stuff.

not on a vt100 or vt102 emulation. I don't really know much/anything
about the format for these emulatoins, however even if they DID(do?) support
color, I doubt the escape sequences would be the same as the ANSI ones. And,
if they term program is being smart, it really SHOULDNN'T support color in a
vt100/102 emulation. Also, I don't really see how the BBS sftware could take
over for taht. All the BBS program can do is spit shit out over a serial line
to the other computer. It's up to the computer to interprte that, regardless
of how the BBS format's it. Uh, if WWIV wanted to support VT102/whatever
terms, taht it could do, by sending out the color codes specific to that
emualtiono (although, I dont think that vt 100/102 terms have color, but
taht's not relevant)...but it would still just be spitting control sequences
of some type. it's 100% up to the computer on the receiveing end to interprte
taht. Now, you could a) use ansi.sys, b) have your terminal program interpret
the codes for you and use bios/direct write the colors to the screen c) have
some kind of weird TSR to do it (although, esentially, that's what ANSI.SYS
does)...uh..anyway, I think I said what I was trying to...but, I'm really
tired, so maybe none of that makes sense and I wasted 5 minutes on a

Well, they aren't supposed to (I think) and it is normally only for mono, but
if you take a DEC VT220 terminal (where these emulations came from, we have
had various generations of DEC terminals in the house since I started BBSing
more than 6 yrs ago... It's what I started on.), all the ansi codes work.
Vt100 codes are a subset of ansi, except for the double-size stuff, which
no terminal software DOES anyway... IT is the exact same escape codes for
intense, bold, invisible, inverse, clear screen, position save/recall,
position jump. and of course the colors work as well...

Well actually I've CALLED this board from home before on the DEC terminal, it
looks quite nice---If you have the 8-bit->7-bit conversion on and the ansi on,
it looks pretty much exactly the same, except that the hi-res characters don't
quite match... (ie "--" would be "--", "==" would be "==", etc.)
(well, you can't read those anyway.. ugh...)

Not on a dumb terminal...
"dumb" being part of the terminology (For those who aren't familiar with this

but we're not talking about vt220s, we're talking about vt100s and vt102s
which i believe are pretty much just dumb terminals with cursor pos. stuff.
So, it really shouldn't do color. hmm...you started on a DEC terminal?
That's cool...how much does a vt220 cost, anyway? I guess you'd have to buy
it used, though, wouldn't you...maybe DEC still make sthem...I dunno. That
would be cool to have a few of those...i'd assuem they'd be pretty cost
effective, as termials on a serial lan or something..of course, ti woudlnt' be
really a lan, but more of an information thing

/ Well actually I've CALLED this board from home before on the DEC terminal,
/ it looks quite nice---If you have the 8-bit->7-bit conversion on and the
/ ansi on, it looks pretty much exactly the same, except that the hi-res
/ characters don't quite match... (ie "DD" would be "--", "MM" would be "==",
/ etc.)
/ (well, you can't read those anyway.. ugh...)

well, the colors are fine. But the "DD" and "MM" come as DD and MM, not
whatever they were supposed to be.

yeah, sorta like VTAS or the usual LAN terminals they often have at
libraries...

not very fancy indeed.

i dunno about kermit, but for shit on the net, it's wise to uuencode shit you
want to mail to someone because the message gets thrown into loads of servers.
8 to 7 bit, back to 8, then back to 7....etc....

makes it easy to send relative small files to someone who only has email
capability, tho.

[ANSI DELETED] (should be RELATIVELY....too lazy to edit)

They are the worst ripoff ever. YOu could get something for a fifteenth of a
cost that did 10000 times as much stuff (ie a 286 with a 10 meg harddrive).

seriulsy? Doh...that's what kills DEC, is stupid stuff like that. They

what is it? A terminal with a disk drive and a serial port...fear.

That's what MAKES dec more than it kills it.. that's how they
get a lot of profit. The government loves buying from DEC.

I almost bought one last summer, and it was about $350. Know any actual
drummers?
