First Season:

  1. "Pilot" (101)
Debut: Paul and Jamie Buchman are Manhattan newlyweds adjusting to life together. Realizing they have not had sex in five days, Jamie and Paul decide to spend the evening home alone. It is not to be as their scheduled evening alone goes off schedule as each assumes the other called to cancel their previously scheduled evening with friends. Jamie's sister, Lisa, pops in, a bit shaky after having "broken up with that creep in Fort Lee." Then their rather trying friends, Mark and Fran Devanow, arrive for dinner on the wings of confused invitation signals. Giving up, Paul calls his loopy bachelor buddy, Jay Shelby, who spends much of the evening on a stationary exercycle.
  2. "Sofa's Choice" (104)
Couch, sofa, love seat. Roughly the same? Not if it's the first one purchased by "us," as opposed to "you" or "me." Philip: Richard Roat.
  3. "Sunday Times" (103)
"Sunday, sweet Sunday, with nothing to do" except decide what to do, movie or museum, before others' Sundays intrude. Oops, too late.
  4. "Out of the Past" (102)
News of his ex-girlfriend (Lisa Edelstein) fills Paul with excitement, followed by guilt over the excitement, followed by blithering idiocy after inviting Jamie to meet her.
  5. "Paul in the Family" (105)
As usual, the arrival of Jamie's parents (Paul Dooley, Nancy Dussault) turns Jamie into "a raving lunatic," who bribes her sister, Lisa, to share the experience.
  6. "I'm Just So Happy for You" (106)
The idea of marital teamwork is lost on Paul, who strikes out with his baseball film the same day Jamie scores a major success.
  7. "Token Friend" (107)
The subway holds a bad memory for Paul in the form of a former fellow film student (Steve Buscemi), who makes token change instead of films, and may blame Paul for it. Ryan: Spencer Klein.
  8. "The Apartment" (109)
Planning a will brings up Paul's old bachelor pad, which he still sublets, but Jamie would prefer he surrender the lease to the odd sublessee, a fellow named Kramer (Michael Richards).
  9. "Riding Backwards" (111)
On the train to Connecticut for Thanksgiving with Jamie's parents, Paul and Jamie are fine; Mark and Fran are fighting; and Selby and Lisa are just friends. But, on the return trip, everything is opposite.
  10. "Neighbors from Hell" (110)
The Buchmans get off on the wrong foot with their new neighbors, and each subsequent step only makes things worse. Maggie: Judy Geeson. Hal: Paxton Whitehead.
  11. "Met Someone" a.k.a. "When Jamie Met Paul" (113)
Here's the story of how Jamie met Paul, who had to work hard to find her after a chance encounter, and talk fast to turn their next meeting into a dinner date. Lester: David Arnott.
  12. "Maid About You" (108)
The Buchman's new once-a-week maid (Beata Pozniak) is a big help, but she's brokenhearted upon learning her affection for Paul is not mutual.
  13. "Togetherness" (112)
How much togetherness is too much? Producer Jamie oversees Paul after hiring him to direct a film for her client. That's too much. Al: Jerry Hardin. Apple: Bill Dunlevy.
  14. "Weekend Getaway" (116)
A spontaneous getaway to the country doesn't instantly cure Jamie's job stress -- but once it does, she's for making the getaway permanent. Ned: Murphy Dunne.
  15. "The Wedding Affair" (115)
After inadvertently revealing a secret about a bride to her father, Paul badgers Jamie into telling one of hers to him, and he's sorry that he does. Unknown Couple: Annie Abbott, Neil Vipond.
  16. "Love Among the Tiles" (114)
What's a couple to do if they're trapped in the bathroom on Valentine's Day? Paul and Jamie know -- now. Included: mutual facials, and antacids as food. Andrew: Gregory Paul Martin.
  17. "The Billionaire" (118)
The eccentric billionaire (Jerry Lewis) who wants Paul to make a film about him is a bit too friendly, while Paul's new editor-cameraman (Steven Wright) will hardly speak. Beldon: Bill Fox.
  18. "The Man Who Said Hello" (119)
Paul's father becomes famous after an incident with Regis Philbin that embarrasses Paul -- but not as much as being seen later as the overreactive son by all of New York. Joy Philbin also appears. Mimi: Maria Pitillo.
  19. "Swept Away" (117)
Jamie figures out what's going on between Lisa and her new boyfriend (Charles Shaughnessy), and figures they're moving too fast, considering they've known each other only a week.
  20. "The Spy Girl Who Loved Me" (120)
Jamie's client (Barbara Feldon) is the former TV star, Spy Girl, idolized by Paul and Ira in their childhood, which seems to return as they compete for her attention, and Ira wins -- big.
  21. "The Painter" (121)
Paul has no qualms about leaving Jamie alone with the ex-boyfriend (Rick Rossovich) she's hired to paint the apartment, but he finds a stunning picture when he returns.
  22. "Happy Anniversary" (122)
At the Buchman's anniversary bash, love blooms between Paul's cameraman (Steven Wright) and assistant (Meagan Fay), but there's no love lost between the now separated Fran and Mark.

    Second Season:

  23. "Murray's Tale"
Paul may have to call K-911 when Lisa, against his wishes, takes Murray for a walk and returns with a pooch that Paul doggedly insists can't be Murray -- this one is smart. Cop: Jerry Adler.
  24. "Bing, Bang, Boom"
Phone calls, neighbor noise and Murray's invisible mouse are just some of the things distracting Paul and Jamie from attempts at romance.
  25. "Bedfellows"
A heart attack puts Paul's father in the hospital, leaving his mother home alone, until Jamie tries to score some extra -- and much needed -- "nice points" with her. Sharon: Randy Graff.
  26. "Married to the Job"
While dining out, Paul tells of his meddlesome new producer (Larry Miller), and Jamie vents about her same old credit-grabbing boss (Ken Jenkins) -- who happens to be seated nearby. Rick: Cameron Thor.
  27. "So I Married a Hair Murderer"
Paul isn't at all pleased with Jamie, who just has too much free time, which she uses to cut his hair -- and his film.
  28. "An Unplanned Child"
Paul's work leaves Jamie alone to trick-or-treat with his seven-year-old nephew (Bradley Pierce), whose visit Paul forgot to mention. Remy: Marva Hicks.
  29. "Natural History"
Was it fate or luck that brought Jamie and Paul together? Jamie's belief that it was fate annoys Paul, who's already miffed that Jamie is spending time with Lisa rather than him. Paul finds little consolation in a beer with Ira, who drags Paul along as he pursues Ursula, the waitress, to her other job at a museum. . . where, as it happens, Lisa and Jamie are meeting Lisa's blind date. Of course, Jamie and Paul meet. A coincidence? Maybe not. Jamie remembers a childhood visit to the museum that's amazingly similar to one that Paul recalls.
  30. "Surprise"
On her thirtieth birthday, Jamie suspects a party, but that's not the birthday surprise arranged by Paul, who gets separated from Jamie en route, making for potential gray hairs for both. Ricky: John Fleck. Subway Passenger: Mark Schiff.
  31. "A Pair of Hearts"
Cyndi Lauper plays Ira's wife, a casino hostess who arranges a free weekend in Atlantic City for Ira -- to get him to sign their divorce papers. Al: Keone Young.
  32. "It's a Wrap"
Unemployed Jamie is envious because Paul has something he loves to do; and Paul feels betrayed when Lou (Larry Miller) tampers with his latest labor of love.
  33. "Edna Returns"
Lisa comes into her own, under a pseudonym, as a case study in "the saddest chapter" of her shrink's book, which blames an "overbearing" sister for her problems.
  34. "Paul is Dead"
The death of someone else named Paul Buchman affects Paul, who suddenly finds he's not approved for credit -- and wants to know more about his namesake.
  35. "Same Time Next Week"
The Buchmans endure two months of separation when Paul has a film shoot in Chicago and blows into town for weekends only, weather permitting.
  36. "The Late Show"
Jamie learns that Fran may be pregnant, and Paul learns that Ira may have gotten someone pregnant -- but Jamie and Paul don't realize that it's Ira who may have gotten Fran pregnant.
  37. "Virtual Reality"
Paul invests in a virtual-reality system without consulting Jamie, who's angered by his actions -- both real and imagined. Christie Brinkley and Andre Agassi have cameos. Ed: J.D. Daniels.
  38. "Cold Feet"
On Valentine's Day, Paul and Jamie recall the day three years before when they moved in together and became engaged. Landlord: Louis Guss.
  39. "Instant Karma"
Jamie's fortune cookie predicts bad luck will follow an ill-gotten gain, but it's Paul who suffers misfortune as they head for a party at Yoko Ono's apartment. Cabbie: Susan Blommaert.

  40. Jamie and Paul are horrified after discovering that Paul unwittingly "returned" their revealing homemade video to the video-rental store. Lark: Kenneth Tigar. Dutch: Steve Paymer. Boss: Ryan Stiles.
  41. "Love Letters"
The Buchmans find letters written by former tenants of their apartment, which chronicle a World War II love story that Jamie feels parallels hers and Paul's. Millie: Kim Hunter. Wicker: Jerry Adler. Mr. Barton: Dick O'Neill.
  42. "The Last Scampi"
Jamie and Paul refuse to take sides regarding an incident between their mothers, while Lisa plays both sides; and Murray is found to be suffering from his own mother problems. Vet: Erick Avari. Mona's Owner: Allan Arbus.
  43. "Disorientation"
On the first day of school, Fran, Lisa, and Ira race against time to cover for Paul, who forgot to mail Jamie's registration. Professors: Julia Sweeney, Jim Piddock, Mary Portser, Stephen Pearlman.

  44. The Buchmans accompany Fran on her blind date with Jamie's classmate (David Beron). But guess who else is coming for dinner -- Fran's estranged husband.
  45. "Up All Night"
Jamie's sleeplessness prompts an all-night adventure for her and Paul, taking them from the basement to the rooftop for a tango with John Astin -- if that's who it really is. Garth Brooks has a cameo. Wicker: Jerry Adler.
  46. "With This Ring. . ."
Second-anniversary blues. . . Paul loses his wedding ring; he and Jamie endure three congratulatory lunches; and an encounter with Paul's nephew (Andrew J. Ferchland) causes the Buchmans to rethink having a child. Debbie: Robin Bartlett. Sylvia: Cynthia Harris. (1 hour.)

her after a chance encounter, and talk fast to turn their next
meeting into a dinner date. Lester: David Arnott.

12. "Maid About You" (108)
The Buchman's new once-a-week maid (Beata Pozniak) is a big help, but
she's brokenhearted upon learning her affection for Paul is not
    mutual.

13. "Togetherness" (112)
How much togetherness is too much? Producer Jamie oversees Paul after
hiring him to direct a film for her client. That's too much.
Al: Jerry Hardin. Apple: Bill Dunlevy.

14. "Weekend Getaway" (116)
A spontaneous getaway to the country doesn't instantly cure Jamie's job
stress -- but once it does, she's for making the getaway permanent.
    Ned: Murphy Dunne.

15. "The Wedding Affair" (115)
After inadvertently revealing a secret about a bride to her father, Paul
badgers Jamie into telling one of hers to him, and he's sorry that he
does. Unknown Couple: Annie Abbott, Neil Vipond.

16. "Love Among the Tiles" (114)
What's a couple to do if they're trapped in the bathroom on Valentine's
Day? Paul and Jamie know -- now. Included: mutual facials, and
antacids as food. Andrew: Gregory Paul Martin.

17. "The Billionaire" (118)
The eccentric billionaire (Jerry Lewis) who wants Paul to make a film
about him is a bit too friendly, while Paul's new editor-cameraman
(Steven Wright) will hardly speak. Beldon: Bill Fox.

18. "The Man Who Said Hello" (119)
Paul's father becomes famous after an incident with Regis Philbin that
embarrasses Paul -- but not as much as being seen later as the
overreactive son by all of New York. Joy Philbin also appears.
    Mimi: Maria Pitillo.

19. "Swept Away" (117)
Jamie figures out what's going on between Lisa and her new boyfriend
(Charles Shaughnessy), and figures they're moving too fast, considering
they've known each other only a week.

20. "The Spy Girl Who Loved Me" (120)
Jamie's client (Barbara Feldon) is the former TV star, Spy Girl, idolized
by Paul and Ira in their childhood, which seems to return as they compete
for her attention, and Ira wins -- big.

21. "The Painter" (121)
Paul has no qualms about leaving Jamie alone with the ex-boyfriend (Rick
Rossovich) she's hired to paint the apartment, but he finds a stunning
    picture when he returns.

22. "Happy Anniversary" (122)
At the Buchman's anniversary bash, love blooms between Paul's cameraman
(Steven Wright) and assistant (Meagan Fay), but there's no love lost
between the now separated Fran and Mark.

Second Season:
==============

23. "Murray's Tale"
Paul may have to call K-911 when Lisa, against his wishes, takes Murray
for a walk and returns with a pooch that Paul doggedly insists can't be
Murray -- this one is smart. Cop: Jerry Adler.

24. "Bing, Bang, Boom"
Phone calls, neighbor noise and Murray's invisible mouse are just some of
the things distracting Paul and Jamie from attempts at romance.

25. "Bedfellows"
A heart attack puts Paul's father in the hospital, leaving his mother
home alone, until Jamie tries to score some extra -- and much needed --
"nice points" with her. Sharon: Randy Graff.

26. "Married to the Job"
While dining out, Paul tells of his meddlesome new producer (Larry
Miller), and Jamie vents about her same old credit-grabbing boss (Ken
Jenkins) -- who happens to be seated nearby. Rick: Cameron Thor.

27. "So I Married a Hair Murderer"
Paul isn't at all pleased with Jamie, who just has too much free time,
which she uses to cut his hair -- and his film.

28. "An Unplanned Child"
Paul's work leaves Jamie alone to trick-or-treat with his seven-year-old
nephew (Bradley Pierce), whose visit Paul forgot to mention.
    Remy: Marva Hicks.

29. "Natural History"
Was it fate or luck that brought Jamie and Paul together? Jamie's belief
that it was fate annoys Paul, who's already miffed that Jamie is spending
time with Lisa rather than him. Paul finds little consolation in a beer
with Ira, who drags Paul along as he pursues Ursula, the waitress, to her
other job at a museum. . . where, as it happens, Lisa and Jamie are
meeting Lisa's blind date. Of course, Jamie and Paul meet. A
coincidence? Maybe not. Jamie remembers a childhood visit to the museum
that's amazingly similar to one that Paul recalls.

30. "Surprise"
On her thirtieth birthday, Jamie suspects a party, but that's not the
birthday surprise arranged by Paul, who gets separated from Jamie en
route, making for potential gray hairs for both. Ricky: John Fleck.
    Subway Passenger: Mark Schiff.

31. "A Pair of Hearts"
Cyndi Lauper plays Ira's wife, a casino hostess who arranges a free
weekend in Atlantic City for Ira -- to get him to sign their divorce
    papers. Al: Keone Young.

32. "It's a Wrap"
    Unemployed Jamie is envious because Paul has something he loves to do;
and Paul feels betrayed when Lou (Larry Miller) tampers with his latest
    labor of love.

33. "Edna Returns"
Lisa comes into her own, under a pseudonym, as a case study in
"the saddest chapter" of her shrink's book, which blames an
    "overbearing" sister for her problems.

34. "Paul is Dead"
The death of someone else named Paul Buchman affects Paul, who suddenly
finds he's not approved for credit -- and wants to know more about his
    namesake.

35. "Same Time Next Week"
The Buchmans endure two months of separation when Paul has a film shoot
in Chicago and blows into town for weekends only, weather permitting.

36. "The Late Show"
Jamie learns that Fran may be pregnant, and Paul learns that Ira may
have gotten someone pregnant -- but Jamie and Paul don't realize that
it's Ira who may have gotten Fran pregnant.

37. "Virtual Reality"
Paul invests in a virtual-reality system without consulting Jamie, who's
angered by his actions -- both real and imagined. Christie Brinkley and
Andre Agassi have cameos. Ed: J.D. Daniels.

38. "Cold Feet"
On Valentine's Day, Paul and Jamie recall the day three years before when
they moved in together and became engaged. Landlord: Louis Guss.

39. "Instant Karma"
Jamie's fortune cookie predicts bad luck will follow an ill-gotten gain,
but it's Paul who suffers misfortune as they head for a party at Yoko
    Ono's apartment. Cabbie: Susan Blommaert.

40.
Jamie and Paul are horrified after discovering that Paul unwittingly
"returned" their revealing homemade video to the video-rental store.
Lark: Kenneth Tigar. Dutch: Steve Paymer. Boss: Ryan Stiles.

41. "Love Letters"
The Buchmans find letters written by former tenants of their apartment,
which chronicle a World War II love story that Jamie feels parallels
hers and Paul's. Millie: Kim Hunter. Wicker: Jerry Adler.
    Mr. Barton: Dick O'Neill.

42. "The Last Scampi"
Jamie and Paul refuse to take sides regarding an incident between
their mothers, while Lisa plays both sides; and Murray is found to
be suffering from his own mother problems. Vet: Erick Avari.
    Mona's Owner: Allan Arbus.

43. "Disorientation"
On the first day of school, Fran, Lisa, and Ira race against time to
cover for Paul, who forgot to mail Jamie's registration.
Professors: Julia Sweeney, Jim Piddock, Mary Portser, Stephen Pearlman.

44.
The Buchmans accompany Fran on her blind date with Jamie's classmate
(David Beron). But guess who else is coming for dinner -- Fran's
    estranged husband.

45. "Up All Night"
Jamie's sleeplessness prompts an all-night adventure for her and Paul,
taking them from the basement to the rooftop for a tango with John
Astin -- if that's who it really is. Garth Brooks has a cameo.
    Wicker: Jerry Adler.

46. "With This Ring. . ."
Second-anniversary blues. . . Paul loses his wedding ring; he and
Jamie endure three congratulatory lunches; and an encounter with Paul's
nephew (Andrew J. Ferchland) causes the Buchmans to rethink having a
child. Debbie: Robin Bartlett. Sylvia: Cynthia Harris. (1 hour.)
